Pallewatte Gamaralalage Maithripala Yapa Sirisena is the current President of Sri Lanka. Although born in the Western Province, Sirisena hails from the North Central Province of the country and is the first president from that province. He is an agriculturist and does not belong to the Sri Lankan political elite.
It was the wind of change that blew across the country since 2015 that made it possible for him to get elected as the seventh president of the country. The country has seen many changes under his leadership acknowledged by many countries in the world and well appreciated by the people in all corners of Sri Lanka, irrespective of ethinicity or religion. The President is slowly, but surely, beginning to fulfil the expectations of the nation to bring genuine healing to the awful physical and social wounds of the bloody civil war. This has enabled the minority civilians particularly in the North and East provinces to step back, take deep breaths, and re-orient relationships with the rest of the population and march towards more constructive and creative living that will take the country forward rather than backwards.
