Setting a good example!

It was a welcome sight to see the photo shows Hon. Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera opting for the six-hour travel by train to Jaffna from Colombo this week to attend the inauguration of the ‘Enterprise Sri Lanka’ national exhibition which commenced yesterday; only goes to prove that there are still Ministers in Sri Lanka who set good example to all politicians. Hope more will use public transport than flying about in helicopters or travel by road in expensive cars with a large contingent of security forces escorting them, for it’s a luxury country in debts cannot afford. Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, is Minister of Finance and is a United National Party Matara District parliamentarian. After having his primary education at Royal College, Colombo, Mangala completed his studies in London.

Let us hope at least the next generation of ministers will follow this example from 2020 when a new cabinet of ministers will be formed by after the General Election expected next year!

It was not surprising to receive this comment from a follower “As Sumanthiran rightly said today, he is one politician who never changed his stance on Tamil’s issues… still genuinely committed.”

  Well Mr. Sumanthiran, the TNA’s spokesman is right that the minister is genuinely committed; but has TNA taken it to their advantage of such opinion that is growing in the south, for most Sri Lankans now accept these Tamil’s issues must be resolved if the country is to go forward?. TNA should get out of its self imposed position ‘as sole representatives of the Tamils’ which they are certainly not; instead should team-up with the rest of the representatives in parliament, of all Tamil speaking people in the country and come-up with a common proposition to the Presidential Candidates and the ruling majority representatives to resolve all issues of the Tamil speaking people before facing the next General Elections in 2020.

  The fundamental rights of all the citizens should be well defined in the constitution; but the present draconian constitution of Sri Lanka has many short comings on many fundamental right issues affecting the minorities and these must to be rectified. The Finance Minister will be the first to support any moves to rectify them and if all the 225 legislators are blessed with that mindset these fundamental rights issues would take only a little time to resolve. The fact that it has taken over 4 years indicates there are still many out of step for petty political reasons.
  
  Do remember this minister, who was previously the foreign minister did his best to get support of all to resolve these issues and failed only because many in opposition blocked his government. But rest be assured the minister will back any moves that resolve these issues and it is best is to give his government another term in office at the next general Election in 2020 to complete the mission to enshrine all the citizens’ fundamental rights in the new constitution.
