Venerable Gnanasara Thero is a Buddhist monk once accused of hate speech targeting Muslims, has been appointed head of a panel on legal reforms in Sri Lanka. What’s more the minorities criticise proposed legal reforms that Sri Lanka’s president says aim to heal divisions.
The appointment of the Presidential task force comes months after a Cabinet decision to amend the country’s Muslim personal laws. Sri Lanka also has the Kandyan Law and Thesawalamai Law, pertaining respectively to the Sinhalese and Tamil community.
It came as a surprise to all minorities that the President had elected someone to head the newly formed “One Country One Law” Task Force, who had previously publicly spoken out against minorities. Further, the panel does not have representatives from the Tamil minority or women, but includes four Muslims.
With the scenario that all past governments over time failing to find solution to the ethnic problem. Many liberals are optimistic about this attempt to absorb the forces that oppose solution, may perhaps help to find solution to this long drawn ethnic problem preventing a holistic rule to the island Nation in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka!
