Race for President is taking place at a time, the Parliament had lost its credibility in the eyes of the people; who await General Election due in two years to resolve it. But the immediate challenge in hand is to elect an interim President for this remaining period.
With four parliamentarians coming forward to contest, it was unclear if parliamentarians would elect one not only to garner the support of the majority of lawmakers; but also command respect and legitimacy in the eyes of the people.
To resolve this the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, opted to withdraw from race the in favour of Dullas Alahapperuma. Thus only three were nominated during Parliament session today for the vacant post of President.
However the race is still on for the parliamentarians to elect a President from Dullas Alahapperuma, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
With another day left for the vote, the parliamentarians can now elect Dullas Alahapperuma, who not only could garner the support of the majority of lawmakers; but also command respect and legitimacy in the eyes of the people.
In fact Dullas Alahapperuma may qualify as our own ‘Madiba’, needed to rebuilt the little island nation from its ruins. For unlike the rest, he has neither bitterness nor vindictiveness; and with a capacity for forgiveness & conciliation to produce the desired results in the remaining period of this presidency.
Under this sinario, it is now upto the parliamentarians to prove their worth to the people and follow their Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa, who has put the country before self by his gallant action. Perhaps we can now act as one to rebuild the lost paradise!
