The full effect of the President’s neo-liberal policies enriches foreign corporations and the Colombo elite while sounding the death knell for working class and poor Sri Lankans. Today, the cost of food remains an issue for nine out of ten households with low purchasing power in the country, with 50% of households buying food on credit. This was highlighted in a recent report by the World Food Programme, where 36% of households are food insecure and 76% “resort to food-based coping strategies”.
Under this scenario for neo-liberal policies to succeed, the President must ensure necessary funds are allocated in the annual budget, for those low-income families in need of interim relief to prevent return of death knell sounding, a common occurrence during the final stages of the civil-war in 2009 north- east of the country!
